Interactive smocking plate chapter
Small Diamond Trellis
Compact two-step diamonds
Two-step upper and lower courses share closure vertices to form small traditional diamonds. This chapter expands the plate into a beginner-readable grid, continuous course sequence, repeat map, troubleshooting guide, garment placement, and print reference.

Pleated fabric and grid
Where the motif appears
The visible structure is built from cable stitch, trellis. Complete each course across the full width in the listed order so shared turns and control rows remain aligned.

How the pattern repeats across the full width
- Mark the first pleat and every 6 pleats before stitching.
- Complete each course across the full pleated width without cutting the thread at every repeat.
- If the final space is incomplete, stop at the last balanced structural turn and secure the thread on the wrong side.
Frame-by-frame stitch sequence
Sequence scope: The sequence is generated from the plate’s 6-row course geometry and shows one 6-pleat repeat plus its shared ending boundary.
Common mistakes and fixes
Stitches pulled too tightly
Looks like: Pleats pinch and the design cannot open after blocking.
Correct: Ease the working thread until every pleat fold stays rounded.
Unpick? Unpick if the fabric remains distorted after gentle easing.
Skipped pleat
Looks like: The repeat widens suddenly and later vertices no longer align.
Correct: Mark repeat boundaries and count the next pleat before every change of direction.
Unpick? Return to the skipped pleat; do not compensate in a later repeat.
Uneven stitch depth
Looks like: A level course wanders or diagonal steps have different lengths.
Correct: Catch the same shallow bite on the crown of every pleat.
Unpick? Only the visibly uneven section.
Lost repeat position
Looks like: A motif ends between the intended boundary markers.
Correct: Pause at each boundary and compare the ending point with the printed repeat map.
Unpick? Unpick to the last verified boundary.
Trellis turns do not meet
Looks like: Mirrored courses cross or leave an open vertex.
Correct: Match the turn pleat and measured step depth before continuing the mirrored course.
Unpick? Return to the last shared vertex.
Finished garment applications
bonnet
Center a complete 6-pleat repeat on the most visible bonnet line and balance any unused pleats at both edges.
baby yoke
Center a complete 6-pleat repeat on the most visible baby yoke line and balance any unused pleats at both edges.
narrow insert
Center a complete 6-pleat repeat on the most visible narrow insert line and balance any unused pleats at both edges.

Instructions
- Pleat 6 gathering rows across at least 25 pleat mountains.
- Mark center pleat 13 and the 6-pleat-interval repeat before stitching.
- From row 3, work two steps up to row 2 and two steps down to row 4; close both courses at shared vertices.
- Check the first complete repeat against the working graph before continuing.
- Block to the measured garment width; use the listed width only as a sampling estimate.
Repeat
- Mark the first pleat and every 6 pleats before stitching.
- Complete each course across the full pleated width without cutting the thread at every repeat.
- If the final space is incomplete, stop at the last balanced structural turn and secure the thread on the wrong side.

Tension: Verify the first diamond closes before repeating across the width.
