Trimming the sheets
Most tiled patterns only need one edge trimmed per sheet. A guillotine or rotary trimmer beats scissors by a wide margin.

The fastest reliable order of operations for taping a tiled pattern together accurately.

Print at actual size
In the print dialog choose Actual size or 100% scaling, never Fit to page, and print only the pages your size needs if the pattern has layers.

Measure the test square
Every tiled pattern has a one-inch or five-centimetre test square on page one. Measure it before printing the rest.

Trim one edge per sheet
Run each sheet through a rotary trimmer, cutting only the two edges the designer marks for trimming. Leave the rest untouched.

Lay out the grid
Arrange the sheets on the floor or a large table by their row and column letters before taping anything, so misprints show up early.

Tape the triangles, then cut
Match the alignment triangles, tape each join with matte tape, then cut out your size with paper scissors and weight it onto the fabric.
Common questions
Why does my printed pattern come out the wrong size?
Your printer is scaling it. Set the print dialog to 'Actual size' or 100%, never 'Fit to page', then measure the test square.
Letter or A4 — does it matter?
Use whichever layer the pattern designer provided for your paper. Printing an A4 layout on letter paper will crop the edges.
How can I avoid taping altogether?
Use the A0 copy shop file at a print shop, or the projector file if you have a projector set up over your cutting table.
Is tape or glue better for assembling PDF patterns?
Matte tape is faster and easier to write on. A repositionable glue stick lies flatter and lets you shift a tile before it sets, which some sewists prefer for large pattern pieces.
How long does assembling a PDF pattern take?
A full dress pattern is 30 to 45 sheets and takes about an hour by hand. With a rotary trimmer and a weighted tape dispenser, most people get it down to 15 or 20 minutes.
Should I trim all four edges of each page?
No. Most designers overlap the tiles so you only trim the top and left edges, or the two edges marked with a dotted line. Trimming all four throws the alignment out.
How do I store an assembled paper pattern?
Trace your size onto Swedish tracing paper or interfacing, then fold the taped original loosely or roll it. Taped paper cracks along fold lines if it is folded tightly and reused.
