How it works
The estimate starts from a typical yardage for each project at an average adult size on wide (58–60 inch) fabric, then adjusts for the things that actually move the number: your size, the fabric width, and whether the fabric has a nap or one-way print.
Narrow 44–45 inch fabric adds about 25 percent more length because fewer pieces fit side by side. Napped and directional fabrics add roughly half a yard for one-direction layout. A 15 percent buffer covers pre-wash shrinkage and cutting, and the result is rounded up to the nearest quarter yard so you never come up short. When you have a pattern, its printed chart is the final word — this is for budgeting and stash-shopping.
Frequently asked questions
How much fabric do I need to make a dress?
A simple sheath dress in an average adult size needs roughly 2.5 to 3 yards of 58–60 inch fabric, or about 3 to 3.5 yards of narrow 44–45 inch fabric. Always add 10–15 percent for pre-wash shrinkage and cutting, and check your pattern's printed yardage chart when you have one.
Why does narrow fabric need more yardage?
Pattern pieces that fit side by side across 60 inch fabric often won't fit across 44–45 inch fabric, so they have to be laid end to end instead. That uses roughly 25 percent more length for the same garment.
Do napped or one-way prints need extra fabric?
Yes. Velvet, corduroy, and directional prints require every pattern piece to face the same direction, which removes some efficient layout options. Add about half a yard for most garments, more for large prints you want to match at the seams.
Is this calculator a substitute for the pattern envelope?
No — it's a planning and stash-shopping estimate. When you have a pattern, its printed yardage chart for your size and fabric width is the authoritative number. Use this tool to budget fabric before you buy or to check whether your stash is in the right ballpark.
