How it works
Smocking shrinks fabric horizontally by your pleater ratio. The flat fabric width to cut is: finished width × ratio + side allowances. Add 1 inch on each side for trailing threads and finishing.
Vertical shrinkage is much smaller — in fact the rows spread apart slightly as you stitch. The rule of thumb is that 3 pleater rows become 1 inch of finished smocked height when using standard 1/4-inch row spacing. If you enter your bolt width, the calculator also tells you whether the panel fits across the fabric and how much yardage to buy.

How much fabric do I need before pleating for smocking?
Multiply the finished smocked width you want by your pleater ratio (usually 3-to-1), then add 1 inch on each side for trailing threads. For a 10-inch finished panel at 3:1, cut 32 inches wide. Add 1 inch top and bottom for seam allowances.
What is the standard smocking pleater ratio?
Most lightweight cottons pleat at 3-to-1, meaning 3 inches of flat fabric becomes 1 inch of smocked fabric. Looser cables or heavier fabrics may be 2.75-to-1; tighter cables or thin batiste may be 3.25-to-1.
How many pleater rows equal one inch of finished smocking height?
About 3 pleater rows per finished inch with standard 1/4-inch row spacing. With 1/2-inch half-space rows, about 6 rows per finished inch. This is an estimate because stitch tension and fabric weight can change the spread slightly.
Should I cut smocking fabric across the grain or lengthwise?
Always pleat across the crossgrain (selvage to selvage). The pleats hold better and the finished panel resists sagging over time. The flat fabric width is the piece's length direction, and the rows run across the bolt width.
