✓ This fabric meets the pattern's 50% stretch requirement.
How it works
Mark a starting length on the relaxed (un-stretched) fabric — 4 inches or 10 cm is standard. Hold one end against a ruler and gently stretch the other end across the grain until the fabric resists. Note the new length.
Stretch percentage = ((stretched − relaxed) ÷ relaxed) × 100. Most pattern envelopes print the required percentage with a stretch gauge — compare your measurement to that gauge before cutting.
Frequently asked questions
How do I measure the stretch percentage of a knit fabric?
Mark a 10 cm or 4-inch segment along the crossgrain, hold one end against a ruler, and stretch the other end until the fabric resists. Stretch percentage = (stretched length − original length) ÷ original length × 100.
What stretch percentage does my pattern need?
Patterns usually print a stretch percentage on the back of the envelope or in the fabric requirements. 25 percent suits ponte and stable knits, 50 percent suits jersey and interlock, and 75 percent or higher is required for swimwear, leggings, and activewear.
What is the difference between 2-way and 4-way stretch?
2-way stretch means the fabric only stretches across the grain (left to right). 4-way stretch means it stretches both across the grain and along the length, which is required for most leggings and dancewear patterns.
