18 Free Baby Sewing Patterns, Checked October 2026
Baby clothes take an evening and a fat quarter, which makes them the best gift you can sew. Here are 18 free patterns we checked by hand, from preemie bodysuits to a swaddle blanket.

Free baby patterns, sorted by what you're making
Baby things are small, quick and forgiving, so they're the perfect first garment and the best handmade gift. The hard part is finding patterns that are still free. We opened every pattern below on its own page on October 27, 2026. For older children (toddler to 14), see our free kids sewing patterns.
How each one is free:
- $0 checkout: add it to the cart and pay nothing.
- Direct PDF: the file downloads straight from the page.
- Tutorial: cutting sizes and steps are on the page, no printing needed.
- Email: the download link arrives after a signup.

- Baby Romper 0-12 Months, Life Sew Savory. $0 checkout. A yoked bubble romper in 0 to 12 months, for wovens, with snaps down the back and at the diaper. Uses gathering and facings, so not a very first project. lifesewsavory.com

Hats and shoes

Swaddles, sleep and the nursery
- Double Gauze Swaddling Blankets, Purl Soho. Tutorial and free PDF. A 42 inch square from 1.5 yards of double gauze: four hems and done. Gauze is slippery, so use a fine needle and a walking foot. purlsoho.com
- Easy Baby Sleep Sack, The DIY Mommy. Direct PDF. A sleeveless fleece sleep sack sized for about 6 to 18 months, closing with shoulder snaps. The binding is the trickiest step. cozydiyhome.com
- Fitted Crib Sheet, Peekaboo Pattern Shop. Tutorial. Mini crib and full crib or toddler bed sizes, with 1/4 inch elastic. Make it snug: a crib sheet must fit the mattress tightly. peekaboopatternshop.com
Toys
- Tag Blanket, Underground Crafter. Tutorial. A 16 by 20 inch blanket from two fat quarters, with folded fabric tags instead of ribbon loops. For supervised play, not the crib. undergroundcrafter.com
- Bunny, Twig + Tale. Free with a newsletter signup. A small scrap bunny that makes a sweet newborn gift; embroider the face. twigandtale.com
Three things to know when sewing for babies
- Keep sleepwear and crib items simple. Skip small buttons, beads, appliques and glued trims that could come loose, and keep ties and cords off anything a baby sleeps in. Nothing loose belongs in the crib except a tight-fitting sheet; tag blankets, toys and tied bonnets are for supervised awake time.
- Use snaps, and tug-test them. Plastic or metal snaps make diaper changes easy. Set them through interfaced or doubled fabric, then tug every snap before the first wear and again after washing. Embroider toy faces instead of using button or safety eyes.
- Pre-wash and keep seams soft. Wash and dry fabric the way the garment will be laundered so it shrinks before you cut, finish inside seams smoothly, and choose soft, breathable fabrics like cotton knit, double gauze and flannel.
What we left out
- A sleep sack pattern whose page now returns a 404.
- Free bibs and swaddles whose size or file we couldn't confirm.
- Free add-ons that only work with a paid pattern, such as a bonnet brim.
Keep the baby patterns (and the sizes) together
Babies change size every few months, which is exactly when you lose track of which pattern ran small. Sewist Studio is a free digital sewing room: save these PDFs to your pattern library tagged by size, keep a measurement profile for the baby, and log the knit scraps you have so you can match a pattern to your stash.
