18 Free Kids Sewing Patterns (Checked October 2026)

    By 9 min read

Kids outgrow clothes fast, which makes free patterns extra welcome. Here are 18 free patterns for babies, toddlers and big kids, each checked on its own page in October 2026.

Free kids patterns that are still free

Children's clothes are the perfect place to use a free pattern. Projects are small, a yard of fabric goes a long way, and by the time you've perfected a fit they've grown a size. The catch is that many roundups are out of date. Made by Rae's kids patterns are now paid, Simple Life Pattern Company's "free" patterns are listed at $10 and only free with a Facebook group code, and some old links now land on parked domains.

So we checked. Every pattern below was opened on its own page on October 19, 2026 to confirm it is free, how you get it, and the size range. A few notes before you start:

    • "$0 checkout" means you add it to the cart and check out without paying.
    • "Email" means the download link is sent after you enter your email or join a newsletter.
    • Several free kids patterns are pattern pieces only, with the instructions in a blog post. We've flagged those.
Sewing for grown-ups too? See our checked lists of free beginner patterns, free dress patterns and the full where to find free sewing patterns guide.

Tips for sewing kids' clothes from free patterns

    • Measure the child, not their clothes. Kids' size charts vary a lot between designers. Chest and height matter most.
    • Choose by height for length. If a child is between sizes, cut the width for their chest and the length for their height.
    • Leave growing room. Elastic waists, raglan sleeves and wrap fronts stretch a pattern's life by a size or two.
    • Pre-wash knits and cottons. Kids' clothes go through the wash constantly. See how to prewash fabric.
    • Keep a size log. Write down the size you cut and the date. Next year you'll know exactly where to start.

Sewing for several children? Track everyone's measurements in one place so you aren't re-measuring wriggling kids before every project.

Keep your free kids patterns organized

Free kids patterns pile up quickly, often in five or six size ranges each. Sewist Studio is a free digital sewing room: add each PDF to your pattern library with its designer and sizes, save each child's measurements, and log every finished make with the size you cut and a photo. When the next growth spurt hits, you'll know which patterns still fit.
