18 Free Men's Sewing Patterns, Checked October 2026

    By 8 min readLinks verified

Free menswear patterns are harder to find than womenswear, but they exist. Here are 18 we checked by hand, from a made-to-measure dress shirt to carpenter pants, boxers and a bow tie.

Flat lay on an oak worktable of a folded navy camp-collar shirt, olive cargo shorts, a grey crewneck sweatshirt and a rust striped tie beside paper pattern pieces, a tape measure and shears

Why free menswear is hard to find

Search for free sewing patterns and you'll get thousands of dresses and tops. Menswear is a much smaller slice, and much of what used to be free (Peppermint's patterns, for one) now costs money. So we went looking for what is genuinely free today and opened every pattern below on its own page on October 27, 2026.

    How each one is free:

    • $0: the price shows $0.00 at checkout.
    • Pay what you can: the price menu includes a $0 option.
    • Email: the download link arrives after you fill in a name and email form.
    • Made to measure: FreeSewing drafts the pattern from your measurements on freesewing.eu. It's free and open source, and a free account stores your measurement sets.

    Tees and tops

    1. Old Coast Raglan, Friday Pattern Company. Pay what you can. A knit raglan tee in XS/0 to 7X/32 (chest 32 to 60 inches), drafted for a 5 foot 10 man, with a video sew-along. Print-at-home, A0 and projector files. fridaypatterncompany.com
    2. Teagan T-shirt, FreeSewing. Made to measure. A fitted tee drafted from about a dozen body measurements, so it fits broad shoulders and long torsos that standard sizes miss. freesewing.eu
    3. Arrowsmith Undershirt, Thread Theory. $0. A sleeveless knit undershirt or summer singlet with bound armholes, the one free pattern in Thread Theory's menswear shop. Layered print-at-home, A0 and projector files. threadtheory.ca

    Shirts

    1. Simon button-down shirt, FreeSewing. Made to measure. A classic dress shirt with a collar stand and cuffs, the most popular way to get a well-fitting free men's shirt. freesewing.eu
    2. Carya Shirt, Mood Sewciety. Email. A boxy unisex camp-collar shirt filed under beginner patterns. Readers say the collar step is the tricky part, so baste it first. blog.moodfabrics.com

    Pants and shorts

    1. Colfax Carpenter Pants, Mood Sewciety. Email. A roomy straight-leg carpenter pant with welt pockets and a zip fly. A good second project rather than a first. A4 and US Letter PDF. blog.moodfabrics.com
    2. Woodsia Shorts, Mood Sewciety. Email. Unisex cargo shorts with flap and side pockets, a faux fly and an elastic back waist, up to size 30 (a 49.5 inch waist). blog.moodfabrics.com

    Underwear

    1. Bruce boxer briefs, FreeSewing. Made to measure from just four measurements. Stretch boxer briefs, a quick win once you have a knit-friendly machine setup. freesewing.eu

    Hoodies and sweatshirts

    2. Hickory Ensemble, Mood Sewciety. Email. A unisex pajama top and pants set. blog.moodfabrics.com

    Ties

    1. Trayvon tie, FreeSewing. Made to measure. A lined necktie drafted so the joining seam sits away from the tip, which is what makes a handmade tie look bought. freesewing.eu
    2. Benjamin bow tie, FreeSewing. Sized from neck circumference, self-tie or with an adjustable band. A great scrap-buster, though not the easiest first project. freesewing.eu

    Aprons

    1. Shop Apron, Purl Soho. A free tutorial: you cut it from written dimensions in four sizes, no printing. Two pockets and long ties. purlsoho.com
    2. Albert apron, FreeSewing. Made to measure. A bib apron with a pocket that the designer recommends for beginners. freesewing.eu

    Jackets

    1. Avelia Bomber, Mood Sewciety. Email. A lined unisex bomber with rib-knit cuffs, up to size 30. US Letter PDF only, no projector file. One for when you've got a few garments behind you. blog.moodfabrics.com

More free outerwear: Mood Sewciety's Dean Jacket (email) and FreeSewing's made-to-measure Jaeger sport coat, both advanced. FreeSewing's Wahid waistcoat is the only free vest we could confirm.

Sewing for a man: three things to know

    1. Pick the size by chest, not bust. Men's patterns assume no bust shaping, squarer shoulders, a longer torso and narrower hips relative to the chest. Length is the most common change: Old Coast is drafted for a 5 foot 10 man, so lengthen or shorten the body and sleeves before you cut.
    2. Unisex sizes are often numbered like womenswear. Mood's size 30 is a 49.5 inch waist, and Mood suggests men cut one size up in some of its unisex sweats. Compare the finished garment measurements, not the label, and sew a muslin for anything fitted.
    3. Made to measure skips the size chart. FreeSewing drafts every piece from his own measurements, which is ideal for anyone between sizes, tall or broad-shouldered. Take the measurements with a helper: the pattern is only as good as the numbers.

    What we left out

    • Peppermint's Darcy Boxer Shorts are now pay what you can starting at $2, with no $0 option.
    • Thread Theory's other menswear (Comox trunks, Fairfield shirt and more) is paid. Only the Arrowsmith is free.
    • A women's-only free boxer short and a cropped women's vest that came up in searches.

Keep the patterns and his measurements together

Menswear means a second set of measurements to track. Sewist Studio is a free digital sewing room: save these PDFs to your pattern library, keep a measurement profile for each person you sew for, and tag patterns by size range so the right pattern and the right numbers are always together.
