Free JEF and VP3 Embroidery Designs: 13 Sources
Most free embroidery roundups assume you stitch on a Brother. Here are 13 sources that offer free designs in JEF for Janome and VP3 for Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff, checked format by format.
Free designs for Janome, Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff
If you stitch on a Janome, you need .JEF files. If you stitch on a Husqvarna Viking or Pfaff, you need .VP3 (older Viking machines also read .HUS). Plenty of free designs are PES only, or the format list hides on a second tab, so "free" isn't much use until you know your format is in the download.
We checked each source below on October 19, 2026, and every one listed JEF and VP3 among its formats on the free design pages we opened. For a broader list that isn't format specific, see where to find free machine embroidery designs.

Monthly and rotating freebies
- Embroidery Library. One featured free design a month at a $0 checkout, downloaded from your order history. Formats listed: ART, DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, PCS, PES, SEW, VIP, VP3 and XXX. Best for: reliably well-digitized designs.
- Urban Threads. A monthly freebie at a $0 checkout, often a lace or artistic design. Formats include ART, DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, PES, VIP, VP3 and XXX. Best for: modern, edgy designs.
- Embroidery Legacy. A dozen rotating free designs you can download without an account, a free design kit, and a Friday freebie for newsletter subscribers. Their designs list ART, DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, PES, VIP, VP3, XXX and more. Note that a design stops being free once it leaves the free page. Best for: a steady stream of new freebies.
Standing free collections
- OESD. A small set of $0 designs from a long-established digitizer, including zipper pouches and a key fob. Formats include ART, DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, PES and VP3. Best for: in-the-hoop accessories with good instructions.
- Sweet Pea. Many free designs at a $0 checkout (prices in AUD), from an in-the-hoop specialist. Formats: DST, EXP, JEF, PEC, PES, VIP, VP3 and XXX. The shop now lives at swpea.com. Best for: polished in-the-hoop projects.
- Designs by JuJu. A large set of $0 designs; complete the order and download from your account. Formats: DST, EXP, JEF, HUS, PES, VIP, VP3 and XXX. Best for: applique and seasonal designs.
- Kreative Kiwi. A big catalog of free in-the-hoop designs like coasters and mug rugs, added through the basket. Formats: DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, PES, VIP, VP3 and XXX. Best for: quick in-the-hoop gifts.
- Embroideres. Free direct downloads with no registration, and the page says designs can be used commercially. Each design lists its formats, including VP3, JEF, HUS and PES. Best for: skipping the account step.
- Grand Slam Designs. Many free designs at $0 in the cart. Formats: ART, CND, DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, PCS, PEC, PES, SEW, VIP, VP3 and XXX. Best for: florals and redwork.
- Bunnycup Embroidery. Free sample designs to download; the page says designs include all supported formats, and the site's formats include JEF, VP3 and HUS. Best for: trying a designer's style before buying a set.
- EmbroideryDesigns.com. A huge catalog of free designs marked $0. The site lists ART, DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, PEC, PES, SEW, VIP, VP3 and XXX; plan on creating an account. Best for: the biggest single selection.
- Sew4Home. Free design sets sponsored by Janome America, alongside full sewing tutorials. The forest animals set lists ART, EXP, JEF, JEF+, JPX, PES, VIP and VP3. Best for: coordinated home decor. (The zip downloads didn't load for our automated check, so test one in your browser.)
- Applique Market. Two full applique alphabets at $0, including Ruby Script; other freebies need an order. Formats include JEF, VP3 and HUS. Best for: monograms and names.
JEF only: Lynnie Pinnie offers free designs in ART, DST, EXP, HUS, JEF, PES, VIP and XXX (no VP3), with a few more for newsletter sign-ups.
What we left out
- Anita Goodesign: free designs are for paying members only.
- Holly's Embroidery Designs: the daily free set page showed no designs when we checked, and the shop doesn't list VP3.
- Husqvarna Viking and Pfaff: both brand sites now redirect to Singer's site, and we couldn't find a free design page.
- Smart Needle: only one free design was listed, without VP3.

A few notes:
- JEF+ and JPX sometimes appear next to JEF. They're extra Janome formats; if you're unsure, take plain .JEF.
- VIP is an older Husqvarna and Pfaff format. Take VP3 if it's offered.
- Check your hoop. Free designs are often sized for a 4x4 hoop, with larger sizes in the same zip. Your manual lists the sewing field of each hoop.

Check a design before you stitch it
Free designs vary in quality. Before you hoop up, open the file in the free Sewist Studio embroidery file viewer. It opens JEF and VP3 in your browser without uploading them, shows every stitch in order with the thread colors, and tells you the finished size and the smallest hoop that fits. JEF and VP3 both store thread colors, so you'll see the designer's palette. (HUS isn't supported in the viewer yet.)
