Where to Find Free Quilt Patterns: 11 Trusted Sources
Fabric companies give away thousands of quilt patterns to show off their new collections. Here are 11 free libraries we checked, plus the best beginner, baby and small projects in each.

Where the free quilt patterns are
Quilting has more free patterns than any other kind of sewing, for a simple reason: fabric companies design quilts to sell their new collections, then give the pattern away. The result is thousands of free, professionally tested PDFs, if you know where to look.
The catch is the usual one. Some libraries have moved or vanished (the Lovely Tutorials site is gone, and Art Gallery Fabrics' free patterns page returned an error when we checked), and a pattern designed for one fabric line won't tell you that until you open it.
So we checked. Every source below was opened on October 19, 2026 and at least one free pattern in each was confirmed to download or check out at $0.
Brand new to quilting? Read our beginner's guide to your first quilt first, then come back for a pattern.
Big free libraries from fabric companies
- Robert Kaufman. The largest library we found, with nearly 2,000 free quilt projects to download as PDFs. Good picks: Sarah's Weekend Rag Quilt (51 x 72 inches, a forgiving beginner quilt), the Cheery Runner table runner and the Kona Color Patchwork Party block of the month (68 x 86 inches). robertkaufman.com
- Fat Quarter Shop. More than 1,000 free PDF patterns at $0, from many designers and fabric lines. Try the 3 Hour Baby Gingham quilt (40.5 x 50.5 inches) for a quick baby gift, the Starburst Quilt by Tula Pink for FreeSpirit (70 x 85 inches), or the free quilt-along releasing blocks through November 2026. fatquartershop.com
- Moda Fabrics. A free patterns page with quilts and small projects like the Catnap Mug Rug and the Daisy Chain Quilt (66 x 78 inches). Moda's Blockheads 7 series is posting a new free block every Wednesday this fall. modafabrics.com
- Missouri Star Quilt Co. A free pattern collection at $0, including the Irish Chain Quilt, the Making Waves Table Runner, the Cozy Cups mini quilt and mug rugs, and a monthly sew-along. missouriquiltco.com
- Connecting Threads. Their catalog filter lists over 200 free patterns. The Baby Nine Patch (46 inches square, labelled beginner) is a perfect first quilt, and the Apple Core Table Runner is a nice step into curves. connectingthreads.com
- Windham Fabrics. A $0 free patterns collection with modern designs like the Color Block quilt and the Specimen Drawer Baby Quilt. windhamfabrics.com
- FreeSpirit Fabrics. Free PDFs including the 25th Anniversary Block Party blocks (start with the Sawtooth Star) and Adam Trest's Blue Jean Baby Quilt. freespiritfabrics.com
- Andover Fabrics. More than 100 free pattern PDFs, each designed around an Andover collection, such as Bitsy Baskets. andoverfabrics.com
Magazines and designers
- AllPeopleQuilt. From the editors of the Better Homes & Gardens quilting magazines. Their roundup of 40+ free beginner quilt patterns is a good browse, and the Build Me Up Baby Quilt (52 x 60 inches) is a free download. allpeoplequilt.com
- Suzy Quilts. A modern quilt designer with a free tutorials page, including the Wildflower Table Runner and a sawtooth star coffee sleeve. Her full quilt patterns are paid. suzyquilts.com
- Purl Soho. A few older free quilt tutorials remain online, like the 2016 Prism Quilt, with lovely photos. The site is mostly knitting now. purlsoho.com
Best free quilts by project
- First quilt: Connecting Threads' Baby Nine Patch, or Robert Kaufman's Sarah's Weekend Rag Quilt (rag quilts hide imperfect seams).
- Baby gift: Fat Quarter Shop's 3 Hour Baby Gingham or AllPeopleQuilt's Build Me Up Baby Quilt.
- Learn one block a week: Moda Blockheads 7 or the FreeSpirit Block Party.
- An afternoon project: Moda's Catnap Mug Rug or Missouri Star's Cozy Cups mug rugs.
- Something modern: Windham's Color Block quilt or Tula Pink's Starburst.
Free quilt sources that didn't make the list
As of October 19, 2026:
- Lovely Tutorials: the site is gone and the domain shows a placeholder page.
- Art Gallery Fabrics: the free patterns page returned a "not found" error.
- Riley Blake, Benartex, Hoffman and Quilting Daily: we couldn't load a free pattern page reliably, so we left them out rather than guess. Some Riley Blake free patterns are available through Fat Quarter Shop.
Tips for using free quilt patterns
- Check the fabric line. Company patterns name specific prints. Swap in your own fabrics by matching values (light, medium, dark), not exact colors.
- Read the cutting chart first. Free PDFs often assume fat quarters, jelly rolls or charm packs. Make sure the precut matches what you have.
- Look for errata. Big libraries post corrections. Search the pattern name plus "corrections" before cutting.
- Use what you have. Quilts are the best stash busters there are. See what to sew with your fabric stash.
Keep your quilt fabric and patterns together
Quilters collect fat quarters and free PDFs at about the same rate. Sewist Studio keeps both in one place: catalog your quilting cottons with yardage and color family, save free quilt PDFs in your pattern library, and track each quilt from cutting to binding as a project. When a free block-of-the-month arrives, you can check which fabrics you already own before you shop.
