Recreate the Viral Bias Slip Dress: Patterns and Tips

    By 8 min read

Spaghetti straps, a cowl or V neck and fabric that pours like water. Here are nine patterns, two free, plus the bias-cutting tricks that make a slip dress look expensive instead of homemade.

    The look

The bias slip dress keeps coming back: a nineties staple that's now a wedding-guest, date-night and layer-it-with-a-sweater favorite. What makes it read as that dress:

    • Cut on the bias, at 45 degrees to the grain, so it skims the body and drapes without darts or zips.
    • Spaghetti straps, often adjustable.
    • Neckline: a soft cowl or a simple V.
    • Length: midi or maxi.
    • Fabric: satin, charmeuse or crepe that catches the light.

It has very few pattern pieces. The challenge is handling slippery fabric on the bias, which is where most of the tips below come in.

    Patterns that match

We checked each of these on its own page on October 19, 2026.

    1. McCall's M8106. Bias slip dresses with a cowl neckline, with or without drawstring details. Sizes XS to XXL, rated easy, for charmeuse, crepe de chine or challis. It's now PDF only; the paper version is out of print. simplicity.com

    8. Winslet's Aurora. A cowl neck maxi in US sizes 2 to 32, $6.49 when we checked. The page doesn't say it's drafted on the bias, so cut it on the bias yourself. winslets.com
    9. Friday Pattern Company Saltwater Slip Dress. A simple slip with adjustable straps and B/C and C/D cups in XS to 7X, $16 PDF. It isn't drafted on the bias; re-cut it at 45 degrees for the true look, or sew it as drafted for an easier version. fridaypatterncompany.com

    Fabric

    • Best: silk or polyester charmeuse, crepe-back satin, viscose fluid satin, silk crepe de chine and cupro.
    • Easier to sew: rayon challis or a matte crepe. Less shine, much less slipping.
    • Charm Patterns advises against polyester for its slip. Polyester satin is cheaper, though, and fine for a practice version.
    • Buy extra. Bias layouts use more fabric than straight-grain ones, because the pieces sit diagonally. Follow the pattern's chart, and if you're re-cutting a straight-grain pattern on the bias, lay it out before you buy.

    Bias-cutting tips

    • Cut single layer. Folding slippery fabric shifts it off grain. Trace a full front and back (flip the half piece) and cut one layer at a time.
    • Put tissue or paper under it. Pin or weight satin to paper and cut through both; the paper stops it sliding.
    • Use fine pins and a new needle. Silk pins or glass-head pins and a 60/8 or 70/10 microtex needle avoid snags. See which needle for which fabric.
    • Staystitch the neckline right away so it doesn't stretch.
    • Let it hang for 24 hours before hemming. Bias edges drop unevenly as they relax. Hang the dress, then level the hem from the floor up.
    • French seams look clean on sheer and fraying fabrics.
    • Press with low heat and a pressing cloth, testing on a scrap first.
    • Make a test version in cheap rayon to check fit. Bias garments fit very differently from their flat pattern pieces.
