15 Free Dress Sewing Patterns Worth Sewing (Checked October 2026)
Many 'free dress pattern' lists still point to Peppermint and Fabrics-store patterns that now cost money. Here are 15 free dresses we checked, by style.

Free dress patterns, checked
A lot of free dress pattern roundups are out of date. Peppermint Magazine's dresses (Bardon, Everyday, Bowen) are now pay-what-you-can with a $10 AUD minimum. Fabrics-store's dresses now cost about $10 each. Older blog posts still call them free.
Every dress below was opened on its own page on October 4, 2026. For each one we note how you get it, the stated size range, and whether it is for woven or knit fabric. Where a designer only shows sizes in a chart image, we say "check the chart" rather than guess.
How Mood Sewciety downloads work: Mood Fabrics' free patterns ask for your name and email, then send a download link. Six of the 15 dresses here are from Mood because it is the largest free library we could confirm.

Which free dress should you sew first?
- Never sewn a garment: the Spoonflower caftan or the Popover Sundress (for a child). Both are mostly straight seams.
- Comfortable with knits: the Unfettered t-shirt dress or the Sylvan tank dress.
- Ready for fit and details: the Rosalie shirt dress or the Darwen tiered dress.
- Want something special: the Anthea milkmaid dress, for a wedding guest or summer party.
Whatever you choose, make a quick test version (a toile) from cheap fabric first, and check the bust and hip on the size chart against your own measurements. Our fit problems guide covers the usual fixes.
Free dress patterns that are no longer free
