15 Free Sewing Patterns for Beginners (Checked October 2026)

    By 9 min read

Plenty of 'free beginner patterns' online turn out to be paid, or not beginner friendly. Here are 15 that are actually free, in the order a new sewist should make them.

A beginner's first sewing projects on a worktable: a canvas tote bag, gingham pajama pants, a pillowcase and a scrunchie beside taped printed pattern sheets, shears and pins

    Free and actually beginner friendly

Search for free beginner sewing patterns and the same names come up again and again. Several of them are no longer free. Tilly and the Buttons' Margot pyjamas live in her paid book, Made by Rae's Cleo skirt is a paid PDF, and most Peppermint Magazine patterns moved to paid in September 2025.

So we checked. Every pattern below was opened on its own page on October 4, 2026 to confirm it is free, what you have to do to get it, and the size range. They are listed in the order we'd suggest sewing them: each one adds one or two new skills.

Before you start: if you haven't used a sewing pattern before, read how to read a sewing pattern first. Ten minutes there saves an evening of unpicking.

Stage 1: straight lines (an afternoon each)

These teach you to cut accurately, sew a straight seam and press. No pattern pieces to print for most of them, just measurements.

    1. Make a Scrunchie, Seamwork. A free article with an 18 x 4 inch rectangle and some elastic. About 1/8 yard of fabric, so it is a good use for scraps. seamwork.com/sewing-tutorials/make-a-scrunchie

    2. Pillowcases for Every Bed, Purl Soho. Free tutorial with cutting measurements for standard, queen and king pillows. All straight seams, plus a gentle first try at French seams. purlsoho.com

    3. Twenty Minute Tote, Purl Soho. An unlined tote about 14 x 13 inches in upholstery-weight cotton or canvas with webbing handles. Only straight and zigzag stitches. purlsoho.com

Stage 2: bags with a real pattern

Now you print a PDF, tape it together and follow an instruction booklet, without worrying about fit.

    4. Costa Tote, Helen's Closet. Free with newsletter signup. One size, for canvas, denim or twill, with A4/Letter and A0 files and a full booklet. Labelled beginner friendly. helensclosetpatterns.com

    5. Spirea Tote, Mood Sewciety. Free with name and email. A lined tote in small, medium and large. Mood estimates one to two hours. blog.moodfabrics.com

New to PDF patterns? Our guide to A0 vs print-at-home patterns explains which file to print and how to check the test square.

Stage 3: your first clothes (elastic waists)

Elastic waists mean no zips, no buttons and very little fitting. You'll learn casings, hems and how to pick a size.

    6. Multi Elastic Waist Skirt, Tessuti. $0 at checkout. Australian sizes 6 to 22, lightweight wovens. It is mostly rectangles and elastic channels, with a pocket piece. Labelled "All levels." tessuti-shop.com

    7. Sport Shorts, Friday Pattern Company. Pay what you can, with a free option at checkout. Sizes XS/0 to 7X/32 (up to a 63 inch hip). Drawstring elastic waist in light to mid-weight wovens. fridaypatterncompany.com

    8. Lydia Loungewear Set, Mood Sewciety. Free with name and email. A sweatshirt and elastic-waist joggers in XXS to 4XL. This is the pajama-pants project most beginner lists recommend, and it really is free. blog.moodfabrics.com

    9. Primrose Pants, Mood Sewciety. Free with name and email. Paper-bag waist pants up to a size 30 in linen or chambray. Elastic casing, no darts or pleats. blog.moodfabrics.com

Not sure which size to cut? Measure your body, not your clothes, and see what size sewing pattern should I cut.

Stage 4: knits and simple tops

Knit fabric is forgiving on fit but needs a stretch stitch or a ballpoint needle. See which needle for which fabric before you start.

    10. Mandy Boat Tee, Tessuti. Free download. Sizes XXS to XXXL in two-way stretch jersey, labelled "Beginners." Drop shoulders mean no fitted sleeve to set in. Note that seam allowances are given in inches only. tessuti-shop.com

    11. Friday Bateau Top, Friday Pattern Company. Free option at checkout. Sizes XS/0 to 7X/32 (32 to 60 inch chest) in knits with at least 50% stretch. Comes with a sew-along video. fridaypatterncompany.com

    12. Orchard Top and Dress, Helen's Closet. Free with newsletter signup. Sizes 0 to 34 (33 to 62 inch hip), wovens only, labelled "Advanced Beginner." No darts, and the dress has inseam pockets. helensclosetpatterns.com

Stage 5: ready for a challenge

    13. Veronika Skirt, Megan Nielsen. Free with newsletter signup. A circle skirt in sizes 0 to 20, rated 1 out of 5 for difficulty, with a stretch view that uses an elastic waist. There is a separate Veronika Curve in sizes 14 to 30, also free. megannielsen.com

    14. Ruby Skirt, Sew Over It. Free with newsletter signup. A button-front midi in UK sizes 6 to 30, labelled "Confident Beginner." Your first buttonholes, but the back waist is elastic. sewoverit.com

    For sewing with kids

    15. Lazy Days Skirt, Oliver + S. A free two-page PDF with no account needed. One piece of fabric, an elastic casing and a ribbon hem, cut to the child's measurements. A great first project to sew with or for a child. oliverands.com

"Free" patterns that turned out to be paid

These come up constantly in beginner roundups (and in AI answers). As of October 2026 they are not free:

    • Tilly and the Buttons Margot pyjamas: a project in the paid book Love at First Stitch. Tilly's free page has smaller items like the Fifi eye mask and slipper boots.
    • Made by Rae Cleo skirt: a paid PDF. Rae's free pattern is the Buttercup Bag.
    • Peppermint Magazine patterns: paid or pay-what-you-can since September 2025, with only a small free back catalog.
    • Noodlehead Super Tote: paid.

Patterns move between free and paid all the time, so check the checkout total before you print.

    Where to go next

Once you've sewn three or four of these, see our full list of where to find free sewing patterns, plus roundups of free dress patterns and free plus size patterns. For more first-project ideas that don't need a pattern at all, see easy sewing projects for beginners.

Keep track of what you download

Free patterns pile up fast. After a few months most sewists have dozens of PDFs in their Downloads folder and can't remember which tote they already have.

Sewist Studio is a free digital sewing room. Drop in a PDF and it catalogs the designer, pattern name, sizes and fabric suggestions, so your free patterns sit in one searchable library next to the ones you've paid for. When you finish a project, log it with photos and notes so you remember what size you cut.
