20 Free Bag and Tote Sewing Patterns (October 2026)

    By 9 min read

Bags are the best free patterns there are: no fitting, little fabric and a finished gift in an afternoon. Here are 20 free totes, pouches, crossbodies and backpacks we checked.

Why bags make the best free patterns

A bag never needs fitting. It uses a yard of fabric or less, teaches real skills (boxed corners, linings, zips, straps) and makes a gift that people actually use. That's why nearly every designer offers a free one.

It's also why bag roundups go stale fast. Noodlehead's Super Tote, a staple of "free tote" lists, is a paid pattern, and so is every other pattern in that shop. Swoon Patterns' site now redirects elsewhere, and several Purl Soho "bag" freebies are knitting patterns.

So we checked. Every pattern below was opened on its own page on October 19, 2026. "$0 checkout" means you add it to the cart and pay nothing; "email" means the link arrives after you enter your email.

New to sewing? Bags are a great second project. See our free beginner patterns for the order to sew things in, or the full guide to where to find free sewing patterns.

"Free" bag patterns that are actually paid

    As of October 19, 2026:

    • Noodlehead Super Tote: paid, about $12. Every pattern in the Noodlehead shop has a price, and its old free tutorials page is gone.
    • Kylie and the Machine Mule Tote: paid.
    • Friday Pattern Company Bernie Belt Bag: paid. Their free bag is the garment bag.
    • Ellie and Mac bucket and drawstring bags: paid, though the Tote to Go is free.
    • Swoon Patterns: the old site redirects to a different shop and its free patterns page is gone.
    • Purl Soho's Crossbody Pocket Bag and Dumpling Bag: free, but they are knitting patterns, not sewing.

    Bag-making tips that save frustration

    • Interfacing makes the bag. A floppy tote is usually missing interfacing, not skill. See interfacing explained.
    • Use the right needle. Canvas, denim and several layers at the handles need a denim or jeans needle, size 90/14 or 100/16. See which needle for which fabric.
    • Clips beat pins on thick layers, vinyl and cork.
    • Box the corners for a bag that stands up on its own.
    • Bags are perfect for scraps. Our scrap fabric ideas has more ways to use small cuts.

Plan your next bag from fabric you already own

Most bag patterns need less than a yard, which is exactly the size of the cuts sitting in most stashes. In Sewist Studio you can log your fabric with its yardage and weight, save free bag PDFs to your pattern library, and see at a glance which canvas or denim is big enough for the tote you want to make. Free accounts hold up to 25 fabrics and 50 patterns.
